Taiwanese macopa, also known as the wax apple or lian-woo (蓮霧), is a highly prized, bell-shaped tropical fruit known for its exceptionally juicy, crunchy, and sweet, crisp texture, often surpassing the milder Philippine macopa. Famous varieties include dark red "Black Pearl" or "Black Diamond," which can reach up to 14 brix in sweetness, a measure of high sugar content.

Key Characteristics and Facts:
  • Appearance & Texture: They have thin, waxy skin ranging from white, light green, to deep crimson or black-red, with a very crisp, watery flesh similar to a watermelon or apple.
  • Flavor Profile: The larger, dark red varieties are famously sweet and juicy, often described as a mix of apple and celery, providing a refreshing, thirst-quenching snack.
  • Production & Varieties: Taiwan produces superior, cultivated varieties that are often larger than wild types. Popular cultivars include the dark, sweet, and high-priced "Black Pearl".
  • Best Time to Eat: They are best enjoyed fresh, often eaten with salt or, according to some preferences, served chilled.
  • Health Benefits: They are high in Vitamin C, dietary fiber, and antioxidants, aiding in hydration and providing health benefits, with some local, traditional uses including managing diabetes.
